Founded more than 300 years ago, Sawanoi is the brand name of Ozawa Shuzo, one of the oldest sake breweries in Tokyo that continues to produce its sake using pure spring water from the mountains. The brewery is situated along the Tama River in Mitake Valley, an area renowned for its crystal-clear streams, hiking trails, and serene scenery – the perfect setting to savor a glass of sake while surrounded by nature.

You can join a guided brewery tour (reservation required) to learn about the history of Sawanoi and the craft of sake making. The tour explains the company’s history and each step of the brewing process, from rice polishing and fermentation to storage and bottling, all within the wooden buildings of the brewery. After the tour, you can head to the Kikizake-dokoro tasting room, where around ten varieties of sake are available for sampling. The tasting experience will help you appreciate the depth and variety of Japanese sake styles.

Just a short walk from the main brewery, Seiryu Garden Sawanoi-en offers a relaxing riverside space with a gift shop and outdoor seating. Here, you can purchase Sawanoi sake, handmade tofu, and local specialties that pair perfectly with a drink. If you’d like to dine on-site, there are several options: Mamagotoya, which serves elegant kaiseki cuisine; Mameraku, specializing in tofu dishes; and CAFE Shizuku, where guests can enjoy coffee and sweets made with the brewery’s own spring water.

Beyond food and drink, in the Sawanoi area, you can also find the Gyokudo Art Museum, dedicated to Japanese-style painter Gyokudo Kawai, a garden gallery where seasonal exhibitions are held, and even a small temple, Kanzanji. This combination of craftsmanship, culture, and natural beauty makes Sawanoi a place where you can spend a full day exploring and relaxing by the river.
