Culture & Arts Nature & Views
Maizuru Castle Park is a historic park developed on the ruins of Kofu Castle, a representative early modern castle in Yamanashi Prefecture. Built at the end of the 16th century by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi after the fall of the Takeda clan, Kofu Castle later became a key stronghold of the Tokugawa shogunate following the Battle of Sekigahara. At its height, the castle covered more than 20 hectares and played an important strategic role in central Japan.

Although urban development has greatly transformed the surrounding area, many original stone walls from the time of construction remain well preserved. Recognized for this value, the site was designated a National Historic Site in 2019. Since the 1990s, extensive archaeological surveys and restoration work have been carried out, allowing visitors to experience the castle’s historical layout today.
Now open to the public as Maizuru Castle Park, the site is located just a three-minute walk from JR Kofu Station. The name “Maizuru,” meaning “Dancing Crane,” comes from the elegant appearance of the castle’s white walls, said to resemble a crane spreading its wings. The park features original stone walls, restored gates, and the reconstructed Inari Yagura turret that serves as a viewing space.
The park is also one of Kofu’s most popular cherry blossom spots, with around 160 trees blooming along the stone walls each spring. From the castle keep, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Kofu City throughout the seasons. Adding to the experience, a hotel located on the former castle grounds offers a unique stay combining history and comfort, including a natural open-air hot spring bath with views of Mt. Fuji and the old castle town. Nearby, numerous wineries around the castle and Kofu Station invite visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls paired with local wines.
