Fudaba Kashi Park

Stroll away from the bustle of Tokyo

Nature & Views
Fudaba Kashi Park, a compact yet atmospheric riverside park located along the Ayase River, just a short walk from Dokkyo-daigaku-mae (Soka Matsubara) Station on the Tobu Skytree Line. The park recreates a historic river port that once served as a hub for boat transport during the Edo period, offering visitors an easy-to-understand glimpse into Soka’s past through visible landmarks, rather than detailed historical explanations. One of the park’s most recognizable features is a statue of Matsuo Basho, Japan’s most famous haiku poet, who is believed to have visited Soka during his journey, recorded in Oku-no Hosomichi. Nearby, visitors will also find haiku monuments by Masaoka Shiki and other literary figures, creating a quiet cultural atmosphere well suited to a stroll. Another highlight is Jinzaemon Weir, a historic river structure designated as a prefectural cultural property, which adds a distinctive visual element to the riverside landscape. Rising above the park is a wooden pentagonal observation tower about 11 meters high, built with Japanese cedar and cypress, from which visitors can enjoy open views of the river and surrounding greenery without a strenuous climb. From the park, the scenery naturally continues into the Soka Matsubara Promenade, a beautifully maintained pine-lined walkway stretching about 1.5 kilometers and planted with 634 pine trees. Designated in 2014 as a National Place of Scenic Beauty as part of the “Scenic Area of Oku-no Hosomichi,” the promenade enhances the appeal of Fudaba Kashi Park, making the area a popular spot for relaxed walks, seasonal photography, and a calm escape from central Tokyo.
