Experience & Activities Nature & Views

As one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, Tanigawadake delivers a healthy challenge for rock climbers and a mesmerizing viewpoint for onlookers.

Mount Tanigawa forms the Tanigawa Mountain Range, alongside neighboring peaks, Mount Mantaro, Mount Sennokura, and Mount Shigekuradake. With an elevation of 1,977 meters, this peak, located on the prefectural border of Gunma and Niigata, promises both panoramic views and a hearty challenge for climbers. The luscious views change along with the seasons, as the beech forests and steep valleys shift their colors as autumn turns to winter.
The peak is reachable via the Tanigawadake Joch Ropeway by Hoshino Resorts, with the carriage arriving at Tenjindaira Station at an altitude of 1,319 meters. This station serves as a base camp for hardened mountain climbers and family visitors alike. For the former, Mount Tanigawa presents a formidable foe, though there are a variety of mountain trails and rock-climbing routes available, from casual strolls to arduous ascents. The ropeway itself is an attraction, for it not only ferries guests to Tenjindaira Station, but it also offers awe-inspiring views of the natural world below. Stretching 2,400 meters with an elevation gain of 573 meters, the ropeway ride lasts approximately 15 minutes. Mount Tanigawa’s microclimate may be harsh, but the ropeway’s funitel (cable) system promises a stable and relaxing ride to the top, permitting guests to take in all of the seasonal colors that paint the forests below.
