Ancient beams overhead, tatami underfoot, and the muted calm of a former Oshi residence: Traditional Japanese House NAKAMURA preserves more than 150 years of history in Fujikawaguchiko at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Once part of the Kawaguchi Oshi community that supported the Fuji-ko pilgrimage, this house welcomed climbers into its rooms, offered prayers for their safe ascent, and helped sustain a culture of devotion that shaped the surrounding village. As eras shifted, the family adapted—moving from farming and religious guidance into commerce and regional enterprise while continuing their spiritual responsibilities. This enduring spirit of resilience and challenge carried the house through generations of social and economic change. Now carefully restored, the house offers travelers a chance to encounter Fuji’s heritage not as a static museum display, but as a living, breathing environment where architecture, memory, and landscape remain deeply connected.

The café invites unhurried moments within tatami rooms washed in soft natural light. Plant-based breakfast sets and the “Kominka Omotenashi Oju,” for which advance reservations are recommended, are inspired by Oshi cuisine and rooted in shojin-style traditions, reflecting the house’s spiritual heritage while responding to contemporary tastes. Each dish is thoughtfully prepared to highlight seasonal ingredients and gentle flavors. Matcha sweets, traditional skewered dumplings, and simple beverages further complement the setting, encouraging guests to slow their pace, listen to the quiet creak of wood beneath their steps, and absorb the textures of paper screens and earthen walls.
