Take a break from the big city by heading out to Ibaraki for a stunning beach experience like none other.

Oarai Hotel and Annex Gyorai-an, on the coast of Oarai Sun Beach, is a luxurious accommodation that blends modern style with traditional hospitality, or omotenashi. Every room in this impressive establishment boasts ocean views. Wake up early to enjoy the incredible views of the sun rising over Kamiiso’s cool grey torii gate standing proudly on rocks, worn slightly smooth by the flowing ocean waves.

The Kamiiso-no-Torii is one of Ibaraki’s most sacred destinations, built in 856 during the Heian Period (794-1185), and stands where gods are said to have come down to earth. Not too far from the hotel is Hitachi Seaside Park, a popular Ibaraki destination and home to rolling hills covered in vibrant seasonal flowers. The most popular time to visit is in spring to witness the soft blue nemophila (also known as baby blue eyes) and in autumn to admire the red kochia, but it’s beautiful year-round. Of course, you can always enjoy a nice stroll along the shore as well.

Beyond the spectacular natural scenes, Oarai Hotel has a lot to offer, including spacious, light-filled rooms with both western and Japanese décor, public baths with sweeping ocean views, and an on-site restaurant offering breakfast overlooking the beach.

Located two hours from Tokyo by car, this laid-back but impressive facility is an ideal destination for those looking for an easy overnight escape from the city with all the pleasures of coastal living, including incredible seafood, culture, and scenery.
