The now-storied Happo-One resort found in Nagano’s Hakuba Valley came from humble beginnings in 1929 before undergoing major development in the post-war recovery years. Its crowning achievement might be hosting the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics alpine skiing downhill, giant super slalom and combined slalom events. But Happo-One’s popularity is not solely attributed to its Olympic pedigree.

Officially, the ski runs top out at an elevation of over 1,800 meters, with 13 separate courses—the longest of which slithers downslope for 8,000 uninterrupted meters. Covering 220 hectares of Japan’s Northern Alps are slopes for skiers and boarders of all abilities, from seasoned pros to first timers. There are also family-friendly facilities, ski lessons conducted by English-speaking guides available, well-connected transport networks, and access to backcountry skiing.

During Japan’s tourism boom over the last decade, the Hakuba Valley region has become particularly popular with foreign visitors, meaning many of the restaurants, hotels and establishments in the area also cater to those with limited Japanese proficiency. This, combined with the abundance of accommodation and the apres ski atmosphere, make Happo-One an ideal place to stay. In the warmer summer months visitors can enjoy excellent hiking, accompanied by some truly stunning views. Afterward, relax your well-worked muscles with a soak in a hot spring!
