A Ryokan with a Rich Legacy
Ryokan Matsunoya offers a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local history of Katsuura in Chiba Prefecture. Established at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), the inn has witnessed many generations of change. Its current two-story wooden structure reflects the craftsmanship of its era, built during the early Showa period (1926-1989), featuring a gabled roof and a striking karahafu (Chinese gable). This architectural gem earned its designation as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2003, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The building interiors also give the impression of stepping into a different time. The ryokan retains its traditional atmosphere, offering a tranquil escape from modern life. Relax in tatami rooms, stroll through nostalgic spaces, and pause to admire the details of its period architecture. The common area features a lovely corner filled with Showa-era memorabilia, such as an old record player and television set.

A Culinary Experience by the Sea
Located in Katsuura, a renowned fishing town, Matsunoya also treats you to some of the freshest seafood in Japan. The inn takes full advantage of its proximity to rich fishing grounds, offering dishes featuring locally caught bonito, sea bream, shrimp, and other seasonal catches. The meals here reflect the essence of the region’s coastal heritage, prepared with care to highlight the natural flavors of the sea. Meals are typically served in the traditional kaiseki style, emphasizing balance, presentation, and local ingredients. Whenever you’re savoring freshly sliced sashimi or indulging in expertly grilled fish, dining at Matsunoya is an exemplary cultural experience.
