Goshikinuma Ponds
Nature’s Vivid Colors in the mountains of Fukushima
With their otherworldly hues of cobalt and emerald and four seasons of natural beauty, these gorgeous ponds attract nature lovers from around the world. Take a trip into the mountains of Fukushima to see the exceptional natural beauty of Goshikinuma Ponds. The name “Goshikinuma” refers to the marshes and ponds of the area, each containing waters that range from emerald green to turquoise to cobalt blue. This difference in hue is due to the fact that each body of water contains a slightly different mix of minerals caused by the volcanic explosion of Mt. Bandai in 1888.

A Peaceful Hike for Visitors of All Ages
The terrain around the lakes is relatively flat and the trails are well maintained, with structures built at locations with the finest views. The hike is about 3.6 kilometers long and takes about 90 minutes to complete, perfect for families with children and seniors. Alternatively, there is a 4-kilometer trail up to Lake Hibara, which affords panoramic views of the entire Goshikinuma landscape.

Ever-changing Views Through the Four Seasons
One of Goshikinuma’s most remarkable features is its ever-changing colors. Even through the course of a single day, the hues of the lakes can change based on lighting conditions, but the most dramatic changes occur over the four seasons. The area is renowned for its vivid fall foliage, which sharply contrasts with the colors of the water.

In winter, the mineral content of the water keeps the freezing point lower to create the appearance of turquoise waters against the bright white snow.

Access to Goshikinuma Ponds
From Koriyama or Aizuwakamatsu stations, take the JR EAST Ban-etsu West Line to Inawashiro Station, then the Bandai Toto Bus to Goshikinuma Iriguchi for about 35 minutes. During the winter, check the road conditions to make sure roads are open before you go, and take a guided snowshoe tour, as going on your own can be dangerous.
