Fukushima City Minka-en
The finest examples of historical architecture collected in an outdoor park
Minka-en preserves the history and culture of Fukushima through its collection of rare buildings, furniture, and tools relocated here from other parts of the prefecture.

Located in a huge swath of Azuma Sports Park in Fukushima city, Minka-en is an open-air architectural museum preserving the Aizu heritage of Fukushima prefecture. While some buildings represent the best examples of their class, others are truly unique structures designated as national or prefectural cultural properties.

A Trip to the Past Through a Large Park
The sprawling 110,000 square meter Minka-en contains 10 distinct properties, from the humble farmhouse of the Abe Family to the large former residence of the Ono Family, who used the spacious interior to raise silkworms for making textiles. Highlights of the park include the Kakujiken, an inn and restaurant that was the site of important historical events, and the grand Hirose-za Theater, one of the few remaining kabuki-style theaters from its era in Japan.

Preserving Important Elements of Fukushima’s Past
With most of these buildings scattered throughout Fukushima Prefecture, maintaining and preserving them would have posed a challenge to the local governments, and many of the buildings would eventually be lost. By carefully dismantling each building and reconstructing them in their original forms within Minka-en, each building can enjoy a new life in a place where it can be easily maintained and enjoyed by future generations.
