Located in the Chichibu area of Saitama Prefecture, this workshop offers visitors an immersive experience in traditional techniques with more than 100 years of history, including Chichibu Meisen, Nagatoro indigo dyeing, and plant dyeing. Suitable for both experienced artists and curious beginners, it’s an inviting space to challenge your own creativity while embracing Japan’s rich textile traditions.

What is Chichibu Meisen?
Chichibu Meisen is a reversible silk fabric distinguished by its brilliant colors and bold floral and geometric patterns. This unique textile flourished during the Taisho and Showa eras (1912–1989) and was prized for its innovative production techniques and affordability. Its intricate designs are created by pre-dyeing the threads, ensuring consistency and brilliance in every piece. Today, Chichibu Meisen is a symbol of the region's cultural and artistic legacy.

Craft your unique masterpiece
The hands-on classes are led by skilled artisans who guide you through creating custom items such as hand-dyed handkerchiefs or T-shirts. For a deeper exploration, join the special Chichibu Meisen dyeing and weaving class on Friday, when you can use a Meiji-period handloom to weave beautiful patterns inspired by this textile style. With staff offering step-by-step guidance, even first-time visitors and international guests can enjoy the process with ease and confidence.

Beyond the crafts, Chichibu Orijuku Koubou Yokoyama embodies the concept of preserving and celebrating Japanese heritage. The studio serves as a bridge between the past and the present, allowing visitors to connect with local traditions while taking home a tangible piece of history.
