Located in Tokamachi City in Niigata Prefecture, known as the "town of kimono,” Kimono no Aoyagi has been preserving and innovating traditional kimono-making techniques since 1938. This historic workshop offers a unique opportunity to witness every stage of kimono creation all under one roof.

A Legacy of Integrated Artisanship

Unlike Kyoto’s kimono-making, which relies on specialized artisans for each process, Kimono no Aoyagi developed a self-sufficient method due to Tokamachi’s heavy snowfall and historical transportation challenges. Today, this method guarantees quality and the preservation of old techniques, following the original philosophy of “creating the true essence of Japanese kimono.” At Kimono no Aoyagi, skilled craftspeople select fabrics, apply hand-dyeing techniques, and add intricate embroidery to create exquisite kimono. Each piece reflects a deep respect for tradition, together with an artistic vision that continues to evolve.

An Immersive Cultural Experience

In 2018, Aoyagi opened its factory doors to the public. They aim to inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japan's textile heritage by sharing its workflow and stories. Visitors can take part in factory tours (prior reservation required) through all the stages of kimono production.

The "Yuzen Course" provides a glimpse into the art of brush dyeing and screen printing, showing artisans working with fabrics suspended from wall to wall in the hikizome room. The "Shibori Course" focuses on the shibori tie-dyeing processes and allows visitors to marvel at the dynamic and surprising technique of okezome barrel dyeing. Alternatively, the "Full Course" combines elements of both for a comprehensive experience. Besides the guided tours, Kimono no Aoyagi also offers hands-on workshops where guests can try traditional dyeing techniques and create handkerchiefs with unique patterns using either shibori or suri-yuzen dyeing.
After the tours and workshops, it is worth dropping by the showroom at the Aoyagi Honten to admire the completed kimono and obi.

Access to Kimono no Aoyagi

The Aoyagi Honten (Headquarters) is a seven-minute walk from Tokamachi Station on the Iiyama Line. The Aoyagi Akashi Koubouo (Factory) is about seven minutes by taxi from Tokamachi Station.
