Culture & Arts
Located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Odawara Castle is one of the region’s most prominent historical landmarks, offering visitors a rich blend of cultural heritage, scenic views, and hands-on experiences. The castle traces its origins back to the Sengoku period, when it served as the stronghold of the powerful Hōjō clan, which ruled much of the Kanto region for nearly a century. Today, the site is preserved as Odawara Castle Park, a spacious green area where history and nature coexist. The park features restored gates, moats, and stone walls, all surrounded by seasonal flowers and lush greenery, making it an inviting place for strolling, relaxation, and photography throughout the year. At the center of the park stands the reconstructed Castle Tower, completed in 1960 using reinforced concrete while reflecting traditional architectural design. Visitors can enter the Castle Tower to explore exhibitions that explain the history of Odawara Castle, the Hōjō clan, and the development of the surrounding castle town. From the top floor, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Odawara City, Sagami Bay, and, on clear days, the distant Tanzawa mountain range. Nearby, Tokiwagi Gate provides additional insight into samurai culture through displays of armor, swords, and historical artifacts. For a more playful perspective on local history, the NINJA Museum introduces the legendary Fūma ninja, who are said to have supported the Hōjō clan with unconventional tactics during the Sengoku period, offering interactive exhibits suitable for all ages. In spring, around 300 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom across the grounds, transforming the park into a sea of pale pink blossoms. Because of this seasonal beauty, Odawara Castle is recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots, attracting both history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
