Oiwake-juku is a historic post town located about a 15-minute drive from central Karuizawa, offering a calm and understated atmosphere distinct from the resort area’s busy tourist zones. During the Edo period, it flourished as an important junction where the Hokkoku Kaidō branched off from the Nakasendō toward the Sea of Japan, making it a key crossroads for travelers heading to different regions. As a result, Oiwake-juku developed facilities to serve a wide range of travelers, from merchants and pilgrims to official processions. Today, the town retains a quiet charm, with stone markers, roadside features, and the layout of the former highway still visible, allowing visitors to imagine the flow of people who once passed through. A highlight is the Oiwake-juku Local History Museum, which introduces the history of the post town through reconstructed teahouse interiors, historical documents, and everyday tools used by residents and travelers. These displays provide a tangible sense of daily life along the Edo-period road. Unlike central Karuizawa, known for its shops and cafes, Oiwake-juku remains largely untouched by large-scale tourism, making it especially appealing to those seeking a slower, more reflective travel experience. Walking through the area encourages visitors to move at an unhurried pace, listening to the sounds of nature and observing subtle traces of the past embedded in the landscape. Oiwake-juku offers a quieter perspective on Karuizawa, where history, atmosphere, and the memory of the old roads continue to coexist.
