Culture & Arts Nature & Views
Takada Castle Site Park is located in the heart of Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and occupies the former site of Takada Castle, which was built in the early Edo period as the residence of Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The park is designated as a historic prefectural site and has also been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Historic Parks.” Covering approximately 50 hectares, it ranks among the largest castle parks located within a city. Although most of the original castle structures were lost over time, the reconstructed three-story turret now stands as a symbol of the former castle, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. Surrounding the turret are wide moats, stone remnants, and expansive lawns, creating an open and relaxing environment. The park also incorporates cultural facilities such as museums, art galleries, and libraries, making it a place where history, culture, and daily life naturally intersect. Takada Castle Site Park is especially famous for its seasonal scenery. In spring, around 4,000 cherry trees bloom across the park and its surroundings. At night, the reflection of the illuminated blossoms on the water is considered one of Japan’s “Three Great Night Cherry Blossom Spots.” In summer, the castle moat fills with blooming lotus flowers, forming a vast green and pink landscape often described as the finest lotus display in eastern Japan. Autumn brings calm reflections and colorful foliage, while winter offers a quiet, snow-covered atmosphere characteristic of the Joetsu region. Throughout the year, Takada Castle Site Park serves as a cherished public space where visitors can experience both history and nature at a relaxed pace.
