Gongendo embankment

Enjoy a flower-viewing to suit any season

Once part of the embankment system that protected Edo, Gongendo Embankment now enchants visitors year-round with sweeping seasonal blooms.
Nature & Views
Gongendo Embankment is widely known as one of the leading flower-viewing destinations in the Kanto region, attracting visitors year-round with its expansive seasonal scenery. The most famous section is the Gongendo Sakura Embankment, where approximately 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom in a continuous row that stretches about 1 kilometer. In spring, the soft pink cherry blossoms are beautifully contrasted with the vivid yellow rapeseed flowers that blanket the surrounding embankment, creating a striking, highly photogenic landscape. During the cherry blossom season, large numbers of visitors gather to enjoy hanami beneath the trees. Gongendo Embankment is also valued for its wide seasonal variety beyond the spring. In June, colorful hydrangeas reach their peak, followed in July by wide fields of sunflowers that fill the area with bright summer color. In September, clusters of deep red spider lilies, known as manjusha or higanbana, transform the embankment into a dramatic autumn scene. In winter, snowfall occasionally covers the area, producing a quiet and dreamlike landscape that contrasts sharply with the lively scenes of other seasons. The history of Gongendo Embankment as a cherry blossom site dates back to 1920, when approximately 3,000 Somei Yoshino trees were planted along a six-kilometer stretch of embankment on the Gongendo River, a tributary of the Tone River. Since then, Gongendo Embankment has remained a beloved symbol of seasonal change and natural beauty in the region.
