Former Shinohara Family Residence

Peek into a bygone era through this well-preserved merchant house

Built at the gateway to the Oshu Kaido, the Former Shinohara Family Residence preserves the scale and dignity of a prosperous merchant house.
Culture & Arts
The former Shinohara Family Residence is one of the most important historic merchant houses in Utsunomiya City, representing the prosperity of local commerce from the late Edo period through the Meiji era. The Shinohara family was a leading merchant household that operated a soy sauce brewing business and a fertilizer trade from the early nineteenth century until the prewar Showa period. Their residence stood at the entrance to the former Oshu Kaido, a major highway linking Edo with northern Japan, placing the family at a strategic point in regional trade and distribution. The present building was constructed in 1895 and is designed as a kura-style townhouse (a fire-resistant structure that combines shop and living space). From the Edo to Meiji periods, earthen storehouse construction became common among wealthy merchants seeking protection from fire, but the Former Shinohara Family Residence is distinguished by its unusually large scale and powerful structure. Massive central pillars, thick beams, and carefully crafted framework reflect both advanced building techniques and the financial strength of the family, making the residence a classic example of a grand Meiji-period merchant house. Although many associated buildings, including soy sauce brewing facilities and rice storehouses, were destroyed during air raids in World War II, the main residence and three stone storehouses survived and continue to convey the dignity and lifestyle of a prosperous merchant household. The exterior features black plaster walls, Oya stone, and wooden latticework typical of traditional shopfronts, while the total floor area of about 100 tsubo (approximately 330 square meters) gives the building a commanding presence near JR Utsunomiya Station. Recognized for its architectural and historical value, the Former Shinohara Family Residence is designated as both a National Important Cultural Property and a Municipal Tangible Cultural Property, and it is currently closed to the public for seismic reinforcement work, with reopening scheduled after January 2027.
