Japanese Textile Museum “YUKARI”

Embrace the rich history of Kiryu’s traditional textile culture

Japanese Textile Museum “YUKARI” showcases the deep cultural significance of Kiryu textiles from Gunma Prefecture.
Culture & Arts Experience & Activities

Through YUKARI, guests are able to appreciate the intricate patterns and industrial heritage of Kiryu textiles and how this textile culture is tethered to the history of Gunma Prefecture.

“Nishijin in the west, Kiryu in the east.” This long-celebrated phrase symbolizes the importance of Kiryu textiles for Gunma Prefecture. At the Japanese Textile Museum “YUKARI”, this cultural heritage is placed front and center, while Nishijin refers to Kyoto’s historic silk-weaving district.
YUKARI is located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. The city’s history of silk textile manufacturing dates back as far as the eighth century, with records existing from 713 AD. Thus, textile manufacturing is not merely a major economic tool for Kiryu, but also a cultural symbol that has been imbued within the city for more than a millennium. Through YUKARI, guests to Kiryu can learn about the rich history of the city’s silk industry, witness the creative process firsthand, and even try their hand at fabric-dyeing and hand-weaving through beginner classes.
Visitors to the museum can experience weaving on actual looms and observe craftsmen up close, where they are able to marvel at techniques that have persisted for hundreds of years within a city that is devoted to the craft. The city around it may have modernized, but many of the techniques on display at YUKARI are lovingly preserved and anchored in an era long past.
After leaving the museum, guests are encouraged to wander the historic streets that surround YUKARI. Like the silk culture found inside, the local area itself is draped in history.
