A Meiji villa overlooking Sagami Bay

Built in 1906, Seikantei was designed in sukiya-style shoin architecture, reflecting the restrained elegance of refined tea-house aesthetics. The Kuroda family(a daimyo lineage tracing back to the strategist Kuroda Kanbei of the Sengoku period)established this villa on land connected to the former outer earthworks of Odawara Castle’s Sannomaru. Today, the building is recognized as a historically significant cultural property, layered with more than four centuries of local memory. On clear days, the main hall opens to sweeping views across Sagami Bay toward the Manazuru Peninsula and Oshima Island, with the Hakone mountains rising softly in the distance. The architecture frames the scenery like a living scroll painting, allowing guests to experience the passage of light and seasons just as it was over a century ago.Visitors often comment on the quiet harmony between its architecture and landscape.
Now operating as Odawara Bettei Ryori Seikantei since March 2024, the residence has taken on a new role as a dining venue rooted in Odawara’s culinary culture. Seasonal course meals highlight regional ingredients in a balanced combination of meat, fish, vegetables, rice, miso soup, and dessert, each prepared with precision and care. Signature offerings may include local fish sashimi, grilled selections, simmered specialties, refined hot pot dishes such as mizutaki, and other expressions of traditional techniques. While the clay pot of rice gently steams, guests may join in on a short guided introduction to the villa (in Japanese only) to gain insight into its architecture and historical background. More in-depth guided tours of the residence are also available upon request (also in Japanese only), offering a closer look at its sukiya-style design, craftsmanship, and the cultural context surrounding the Kuroda family legacy. Adjacent to Seikantei is Kura Café, the experience extends beyond the dining room into a fuller encounter with Odawara’s heritage, providing drinks and desserts in a relaxed, traditional atmosphere.
Abundant with scenic beauty, historical architecture, and local culinary pleasures, Seikantei is known as one of Odawara’s symbolic cultural spaces. Its calm atmosphere, and its thoughtfully paced and attentive hospitality, evokes a sense of quiet luxury without excess. As the sea breeze drifts through its open rooms, guests are provided a chance to step into its history and old traditions Experiences here can linger in memory long after one’s visit.
