On the shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Sekisho evokes Edo-period travel. Inspired by the relief and awe of travelers who gazed upon Mount Fuji, a single step inside draws visitors into their world.

The current Hakone Checkpoint was rebuilt based on the “Report of the Restoration of Sōsyu Hakone Checkpoint in 1865” discovered in 1983, as well as in accordance with findings from excavation and research around the site, and has been open to the public since April 2007. Along with the restoration of the checkpoint buildings, including the main guardhouse, the senior guard lounge, and the foot soldier’s guardhouse, the stone walls and stairs and wooden fences were also restored. Environmental improvements were implemented, such as laying electric cables underground and maintenance of the cedar trees along the road. The museum next to the rebuilt checkpoint exhibits 300 historical items including old documents, checkpoint passes, official bulletin boards, official stamps, checkpoint diaries, and matchlock muskets.Hakone Sekisho was part of the Edo-period road from Tokyo to Kyoto. This checkpoint ensured weapons did not enter Edo (Tokyo) and prevented feudal lords' relatives from fleeing (their wives and children were de facto hostages). Nowadays, it is a good place to see historical buildings along the street.

Lake Ashi, called Ashinoko in Japanese, is one of Hakone’s most scenic natural retreats. Resting at the base of Mt. Hakone, this largely undeveloped lake is lined with lush seasonal foliage and even offers views of Mt. Fuji on clear days. This enchanting scenery has made Lake Ashi a popular destination for cruises and watersports, including kayaking! Ashinoko Club, located on Lake Ashi’s southern end, is an excellent base for all your watersports needs. The rental facility offers three kayaking experiences that are suitable for visitors of all ages—a morning tour, an afternoon tour, and the Kuzuryu Shrine course. These guided kayaking experiences take between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the course, and offer unique perspectives of the renowned lake and encircling scenery. One of the area’s most prominent photo spots is Hakone Shrine with its partially submerged torii (gate). This brilliant vermilion structure seemingly glows against the deeper tones of the forest beyond, making for an enchanting visual. If you are lucky, you may even be granted a view that encompasses both Hakone Shrine and Mt. Fuji!
