Oyama-dera Temple

Known affectionately as "Fudo-san in Oyama," this is one of the three major fudo in the Kanto region. It is also the first of the 36 fudo (immovable buddhas) in the Kanto region. The temple was founded in 755 by Priest Rouben, who was a separate head priest of Todaiji Temple in Nara. The main image of Fudo Myoo, an iron statue of Fudo Myoo, and Nidoko (two children) are designated as national important cultural properties. In November, the leaves in front of the gate change color and are illuminated, creating a different atmosphere than seen during the daytime.Observe the autumn leaves along the temple’s tree-lined steps or ride the cable car to the summit for spectacular aerial views. For a different perspective, visit the temple at night when the autumn colors and grounds are illuminated.

Oyama Afuri Shrine

Oyama Afuri Shrine

This ancient shrine is said to have been built over 2,000 years ago. As a sacred site revered by many warlords, such as those who partook in rainmaking rituals, and pilgrimages to the shrine became very popular during the Edo period. In the 28th year of the Heisei period (2016), the pilgrimage to Mount Oyama was recognized as a piece of important Japanese heritage, and the view from Afuri Shrine became a two-star Michelin-starred site.Admire the Shonan plains with views stretching as far as Sagami Bay and Enoshima on the horizon — rated two-stars by the Michelin Guide.Just inside the tori gate entrance is one of Japan's three greatest lion statues, Oyama-Shishi.This beautiful teahouse was designed by Yasushi Horibe and constructed by the shrine's own architect, Yukio Uchida. Enjoy the terrace seating with stunning views as far as Sagami Bay while enjoying their green tea tirmasu or other treats.

Ooyama-cable

Ooyama-cable

Ooyama cable car will take you to a great scenic spot that is located at a height of 700 m above sea level in 6 minutes. The cable car is 0.8 km long and the difference of elevation between stations is 278 m. Passengers can fully enjoy grand views from a large window of the cable car: a view of Enoshima spreading below the cable, seasonal sceneries of Oyama and other superb prospects. The cable car won a Good Design Award in 2016. Passengers are allowed to have a stopover at the intermediate station, Oyamadera station.There are many hiking routes to the top, some of which are quite challenging. The cable car is fastest and offers great views. Autumn is most beautiful.
