Izurusan Manganji Temple was founded in the year 767， approximately 1200 years ago.  This Shingon Buddhist Sect Chizan School Temple in Tochigi City is dedicated to the Thousand-Hand Kanzeon Bodhisattva. It is known as being a powerful spiritual location surrounded by forests and water with perpetual services offered for the deceased， zen meditation， and waterfall meditation. Nestled in nature with towering trees and fresh crisp air， the main temple， Omido， was built in 1368 and was reconstructed in 1764 after the great fire of 1740. The main temple hall has been designated a Prefectural Cultural Property whereas the Deva gate has been designated a City Cultural Property and the Izuru limestone caverns have been designated as City Natural Monument."

Jorakuji Temple was founded in the first year of Kenkyū (1190) as the family temple of the famed physician Nakano Tomoyuki. When Nakano Tomoyuki investigated the illness of his daughter, it marked the first time acupuncture therapy was introduced to Japan. Later, he was summoned to the imperial court to treat Emperor Go-Toba’s illness and was given the title “Rokujihōgen.” As his medical skills became widely known throughout the country, it is said that even the Thunder God himself once visited the temple for acupuncture treatment, making Jorakuji especially famous as a temple connected to the deity. Because of this tradition, the temple grounds are affectionately called “Rokujison-sama.” It is also known for the beautiful red spider lilies that bloom in abundance around the precincts. Every year on February 11, a grand festival is held, attracting many worshippers and visitors, creating a lively atmosphere.

With a 400-year history， Ashio Copper Mine is a tourist attraction built out of the industrial remains of what used to be the largest copper mine in Japan. A trolley train transports visitors 700 metres underground to displays of the mine’s chronology and history and demonstrations of the harsh working conditions through life-like wax figures. You can learn more about this industrial property at the three on-site museums including the copper museum with displays of traditional copper processing methods. Then relax at the traditional cafe or enjoy a leisurely walk along the nearby Watarase River. Between 1610 and 1868， the copper mined here was an important resource for the prosperity of the nation. It was used to produce tiles for castles and shrines and was exported to China and the Netherlands. Among the coins of the years 1600 to 1867， coins produced in Ashio were known as “Ashiji-sen” with the Chinese character of “Ashi (foot)” on the back. Today the coin-shaped local Japanese sweet “Ashiji-sen Monaka” is a popular souvenir.
