Participating in a Kiriko Glassmaking workshop is highly recommended for anyone interested in Japanese culture and craft. Kiriko, Japan’s iconic cut glass, dates back to the Edo Period (1603–1868) when artisans began crafting intricately designed glassware inspired by nature and traditional patterns used in textiles and household items.

The patterns, originally cut by hand with carving knives, reflect timeless Japanese aesthetics, including chrysanthemums, hemp leaves, latticework (Koshi), and basket weaves (Kagome). While modern workshops use wheels and machinery for precision, the craftsmanship and tradition of Kiriko are still alive.

A hands-on craft experience

At Sokichi, one of Tokyo's renowned Kiriko studios, visitors can not only shop for beautiful handcrafted glassware but also take part in a unique hands-on class. Guided by skilled craftsmen, you’ll learn the techniques of creating Kiriko patterns using specialized tools in a safe and enjoyable environment. You can choose between a 90-minute and a 120-minute course, or pair the workshop with a lecture about the history of cut glass. All of the workshops allow you to design a glass that’s truly your own, choosing among six types of transparent glass and a wide range of pattern templates, all suitable for beginners. Whether you go for classic clear glass or a vivid, colorful creation, your Kiriko piece will be a unique souvenir to cherish.

Sokichi’s Kiriko Workshop is a short walk from Asakusa Station. Take Exit 4 if you arrive via the Ginza Line (30 seconds) or Exit A3 if you arrive via the Asakusa Line (3 minutes).
