A Luxurious Japanese Inn Frozen in Time

Staying at Mukaitaki is a time slip; the rustic wooden buildings still retain the décor and prestige as when the location was used as a retreat for the samurai lords of Aizuwakamatsu during the Edo Period. The facility is a maze of interconnected buildings surrounding a Japanese garden and the side of the mountain, so most rooms have an incredible view in all four seasons. As a National Cultural Asset, the architecture of the building must remain fundamentally unchanged, and indeed little has changed over its nearly 300 years of existence.

Slip on a yukata and pass quietly through the halls on your way to one of Mukaitaki’s famed onsen baths. When you have finished soaking away your weariness, a huge meal of Aizu specialties awaits: preserved fish, mountain vegetables and Aizu wagyu beef, to name just a few.

Staying at Mukaitaki allows you to spend a leisurely time exploring other samurai-related attractions of Aizuwakamatsu that are located conveniently close to the ryokan. Visit the imposing Tsuruga Castle, where Shogun loyalists made their last stand against the Meiji government, or the Nisshinkan, a former school for training young men in the skills and values of Bushido. The charming Nanokamachi-dori is a street lined with many shops and restaurants offering traditional Aizu food, arts and crafts, many of them still housed in original historical buildings.
