You can’t miss the towering 6-meter-tall pink Chansey play structure as you walk through Koriyama’s Kaiseizan Park. This cheerful image of the Chansey Pokemon is one of several play structures created for the pleasure of small children in collaboration with Fukushima Prefecture and Pokemon Local Acts. Besides the giant Chansey with its twin slides, you’ll find a swing set with several Pokemon perched on top, a swinging structure featuring Cleffa and Igglybuff, and a toddler slide created from Lickitung’s tongue.

Chansey’s Lucky Park in Koriyama is one of four Pokemon-themed parks featuring the adorable pink character. Chansey was chosen as the Pokemon ambassador for Fukushima based on his name in the Japanese version of the game, Lucky (Rakki). The first character of Fukushima (福) also means “lucky”, hence a perfect match of Pokemon and prefecture.

Promoting “Poke-tourism” to Lesser-Visited Places in Japan

The Pokemon Local Acts organization assists lesser-known cities and regions around Japan in attracting tourists. You may already be aware of “Poke-tourism” by the popularity of Pokemon manhole covers. There are also Chansey-decorated lids spread across 34 cities and towns in Fukushima prefecture. With millions of Pokemon fans willing to chase down manhole covers and parks around Fukushima, this initiative has significantly boosted the number of visitors to the region.
