Fukushima’s Extreme Onsen Tour will take you on a journey to a wild hot spring to explore the origins of authentic natural onsen.

The Adatara Mountain Range is home to the natural roots of many onsen. In fact, the onsen waters of this mountain range feed the renowned Numajiri and Nakanosawa Onsen. You’ll take a 40-minute guided hike into the untouched Adatara wilderness where you will find a hidden hot spring. This hot spring pumps out 12,000 liters of 80°C water per minute, enough to fill 67 bathtubs. Here, the scalding-hot water of one of the biggest hot springs in Japan mixes with small streams nearby, cooling it to a comfortable temperature while creating dozens of outdoor onsen, called Yatenburo.

It’s important to get away from the busy city to recharge your batteries. The invigorating hike up Adatara will energize your body. Then, the sulfur-rich warmth of the bubbling onsen will release your pent-up stress and tension. With no buildings or facilities in sight, this is a truly wild onsen, though accommodation, restaurants, and guides are all within reasonable distance. While you’re here, why not conquer the nearby Mt. Bandai and Mt. Nishi-Azuma, trek across the deep snows of Fukushima, or try the exciting outdoor camp food in Koriyama City. For accommodation, we recommend a stay at the Numajiri Lodge, which boasts a milky white onsen.

Extreme Onsen tours are based out of Café & Activity Nowhere, a quaint café hosting a number of Fukushima experiences. Located in Bandai Asahi National Park, pick-ups from Inawashiro Station may be available upon inquiry. From Tokyo, board the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train) and transfer at Koriyama Station to a train bound for Aizuwakamatsu. The closest train station is Inawashiro Station. From there it is a 25-minute taxi ride to Café and Activity Nowhere.

Leave the hustle and bustle of Tokyo behind and come enjoy one of Japan’s most unique onsen experiences with an Extreme Onsen Tour in Fukushima, an excellent way to warm up this winter. The entire journey will take between 2.5 to 3 hours, so it’s great for an overnight trip out of the metropolis.
