Gyoda’s Rice Paddy Art
A Fusion of Agriculture and Modern Art
In Gyoda (Saitama Prefecture), a new tradition has been established: “Tanbo Art” (rice field art), a stunning seasonal display that transforms large rice fields into colorful canvases. Various shades of rice plants create elaborate artworks that showcase the region's agricultural tradition in a modern and impressive way. As one of Japan’s most innovative rural attractions, Gyoda’s rice paddy art combines farming techniques with contemporary creativity, drawing visitors from around the world.

The world’s largest rice paddy art
With its impressive surface area of 2.8 hectares, Gyoda’s rice paddy art earned the title of the World’s Largest Rice Paddy Art in 2015, certified by Guinness World Records. The event takes place every year from early summer to autumn, with planting in mid-June and harvest in mid-October. From mid-July to mid-October, the fields burst into vivid, detailed designs best viewed from the observation deck “Gyoda Tower”, a nearby facility offering panoramic views of the masterpiece.

A must-see seasonal event
The artwork changes every year, presenting visitors with fresh and imaginative designs created by strategically planting different rice varieties. Over the years, the themes have ranged from popular anime to sports events and traditional Japanese culture. Witnessing the transition from planting to full bloom offers a deeper appreciation of the collaboration between nature and human ability. The event not only celebrates Gyoda's rich farming legacy but also fosters community pride and attracts tourism to this small countryside town.

If you want to experience a new and unique art form while supporting a local community, don’t miss this event, which also makes for an exceptional photo opportunity!
