HAJIMARI ART CENTER

A welcoming canvas of local community and art

Experience how creativity blossoms and local culture comes to life in this historic community art center, and surround yourself with imagination. For travellers interested in community based art and culture, the HAJIMARI ART CENTER in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture, is sure to enchant you. It was established in June of 2014 by Asaka Aiikuen, a social welfare corporation, as an art museum as well as a community space where people from all walks of life could come and look at and create art. The building itself is a renovated sake brewery dating back 140 years, and is now a space where people, welfare, and art come together to inspire a creative society.

Inside the art center, there are a host of things to see and do. In addition to the exhibitions, held 3-5 times a year, the HAJIMARI ART CENTER hosts events, workshops, and projects in collaboration with local residents, artists, and visitors like you! Visitors are encouraged to get hands-on with interactive art pieces and are asked to take off their shoes in the exhibition room, fun for children and adults alike, and the perfect way to experience one of its main features: the unique wooden floors. It’s a delightful feature of this space, adding a touch of fun to the warm and relaxed atmosphere of this inspiring space.

Of course, the thoughtfully designed room also features vibrant works of art that fill the walls and offer a colorful contrast to the simplicity of the room’s design and the original structure of the brewery, apparent in the old wooden beams lining the walls and ceiling. And if you want to lengthen your stay, stop by their shop and enjoy some drinks at the ohaco cafe, yet another space that exudes calm and creativity.

This museum is a key supporter of local community and culture, and foreign travellers keen to partake in cultural activities and get an in-depth look at local artists and their works will find just what they’re looking for.
