Trade the conventional hotel experience for something more meaningful: a stay in a revitalized school that celebrates local life and fosters genuine connections with the community!

Located in Otaki Town's serene Yoro Valley, MUJI BASE OIKAWA breathes new life into the former OIKAWA Elementary School, which closed its doors in 2013. Opened in October 2024, this is the third location in Ryohin Keikaku's innovative "MUJI BASE" series, offering travelers a chance to immerse themselves in authentic local culture while enjoying thoughtfully designed accommodations.

Former classrooms have been cleverly converted into cozy guest rooms, while the facility also houses coworking spaces, a shop, coin laundry, and a library—serving both visitors and locals alike. The interior design, crafted by MUJI's design brand IDÉE, transforms nostalgia into art. Old classroom desks become dining sets, laboratory equipment morphs into atmospheric lighting, and even basketballs from the gymnasium are repurposed into creative installations. This playful blend of past and present creates a space where memories and innovation coexist.

MUJI BASE OIKAWA a embodies the concept of "another way of living that blends into the community." Rather than simply observing from the outside, guests are invited to participate in local life through activities like beekeeping experiences and farm harvest workshops. Authenticity can also be tasted through the culinary traditions of the region, rooted in agriculture and hunting: the welcoming OIKAWA Breakfast Set features local specialties such as bagels, quiche, and honey from nearby producers.

What’s more, the surrounding Boso region also offers seasonal delights: spring azaleas, vibrant autumn foliage, and natural hot springs. Skilled artisans from the region craft beautiful items from the area's abundant bamboo groves. You’ll get to know even more about Otaki Town through guided school tours that reveal the building's history and its deep connection with the community, offering insights you won't find in typical guidebooks. At MUJI BASE OIKAWA, guests are invited to become part of something larger, where travelers and locals share wisdom and create lasting connections.
