See a different side of Narita

Narita may be best known for its international airport, but this historical city east of Tokyo is a gateway to Japan in more ways than one. The winding Narita Omotesando pilgrimage path lined with traditional shops and restaurants snakes up from the train stations toward the central and majestic Naritasan Shinsho-ji temple and its colorful three-story pagoda. These ancient temple grounds have been a sacred site for many events over the years, including the annual two-day taiko festival in spring.

Since November 2024, the Naritamonzen Terminal project welcomes foreign visitors to discover Narita’s historical townscape and Edo-period(1603–1868) architecture through various Japanese cultural experiences and tours. The program is based at the local confectionery shop Nagomi-Yoneya Monzen, where you can learn to make traditional Japanese sweets or pressed sushi, among other activities.

But the most unique and exclusive experience offered by Naritamonzen Terminal is its Art Kimono program, which gives participants the privilege of wearing an original one-of-a-kind kimono designed and produced by contemporary artist Yusuke Shimura, who is active in the Narita area. Dress in one of the artist’s colorful and whimsical designs, then embark on a guided walking tour of the grand temple and its historical neighborhood, which was once known as Naritasan Shinsho-ji Monzenmachi.
