Make Okiya Guest House your base to explore the historic city of Kiryu

The OKIYA, originally built as a geisha house over one hundred years ago, was given a complete renovation, later reborn as a boutique hotel and tapas bar in the heart of Kiryu City. A short two-block walk from JR Kiryu Station, this accommodation’s central location makes it ideal to explore the quaint and peaceful streets of Kiryu. With only three guest rooms, OKIYA is the perfect spot for travelers looking for a cozy and intimate experience. The traditional wooden beams and characteristic architecture of each traditional Japanese-style guest room offer an atmospheric and relaxing stay that includes the comforts of modern life, including showers, laundry facilities, and a small kitchen. The facilities also include parking spots for four vehicles, and what’s more, the guest house offers services in Japanese, English, and Spanish to help those from abroad feel right at home in this small corner of Gunma.

Many guests may be excited to try the restaurant and bar, the menus of which are carefully curated by an Argentinian owner and chef. Their delectable cuisine celebrates Mediterranean, Spanish, and Italian flavors. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, as well as tapas and cocktails, and wine-lovers can look through their extensive list and pair their pick with some delicious tapas. And while the combination of Japanese architecture and culture with European foods may seem dissonant to some, OKIYA is a breath of fresh air and blends seamlessly with the historic neighborhoods of Kiryu City.

Outside the historic walls of the OKIYA lies a city brimming with a unique culture and history. Kiryu City was once a large producer of silk and one of the largest textile manufacturing areas in the country. Nowadays, visitors can don a traditional silk kimono to walk the streets the old-fashioned way and explore local shops and antique markets to find their favorite pieces made from the prized cloth. Travelers may even get the chance to see locals engaged with this time-honored craft, using traditional machines to weave glimmering threads together into stunning fabrics. It’s a great opportunity to bring home a little something special from Kiryu!

There are also bicycle rentals outside JR Kiryu Station for those who wish to explore the city on wheels, navigating through streets lined with townhouses, old storage houses, and other cultural landmarks. Whether you are most interested in seeing the historic neighborhoods of Kiryu or the abundant nature of Gunma Prefecture, OKIYA offers a central location and an unbeatable atmosphere where guests can enjoy history, tradition, and great food and drink, all under one roof.
