Sato-Numa
An eco-tourism experience in the Kanto region
Explore the nature of Kanto, from mountain peaks to dense forests to lush swamplands, far from the bright lights of the big city. If you are looking for a travel destination brimming with wildlife, stunning natural scenery, and tranquility, look no further than Sato-Numa. Located in Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture, Sato-Numa comprises five unique marshes, welcoming guests to explore the beauty of nature and learn more about this tranquil area in the heart of Kanto.

Enter the sprawling wetlands of Gunma
As soon as you arrive in Tatebayashi, you will be mesmerized by the surrounding landscape, with a dramatic view of the three Jomo mountains, the Nikko mountain range and Mount Tsukuba. On a clear day, you may also see Mount Fuji in the far distance. But extending in the foreground of these mountains are Sato-Numa’s five marshes: Morinji-numa, Tatara-numa, Jo-numa, Hebi-numa, and Kondo-numa.

With their calm waters and shores lined with azaleas, irises, and other flora, the Sato-Numa marshes occupy a large area between the Tone and Watarase rivers. The waters of Sato-Numa are the source of life for countless plants, animals, and people in the region. Home to carp, dragonflies, water chestnuts, wild irises, tanuki and more, these marshes are a haven for wildlife, which you might be lucky enough to spot during your visit.

Peaceful coexistence between people and nature
In the past, the Sato-Numa region was considered sacred because of its lush vegetation and serene quiet, remaining uninhabited for some time. When people did start to settle down near the marshes, a culture of coexistence and harmony emerged, as did a unique lifestyle deeply intertwined with the wetlands. This culture of coexistence remains today, as conveyed by the three key words used in reference to the marshes: prayer, fertility, and protection. This respect for nature, as well as the recognition of marshes as important natural assets, has helped to steward their preservation for future generations. Sato-Numa is a fantastic destination for eco-conscious travelers and anyone hoping to experience a truly unique aspect of Japan’s natural harmony.
