Showa Natsukashikan
A nostalgic look into life during the Showa Era
History lovers will delight in this charming display of Japanese life in the 1950s. The Showa Natsukashikan is located on the second floor of COTT'N CLUB AIZU, an antique store that faces the historic Nanokamachi Street, a popular spot for walking around and shopping in downtown Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. The Aizuwakamatsu area is known for its rich samurai history, but for those looking for something a little different, the Showa Natsukashikan may be just the place!

A Treasure Trove of Showa Era Culture
This colorful collection of artifacts from the Showa Era (1926-1989) has been open to the public since July 2003 for a small fee and offers a unique look into Japan’s past. The colorful exterior is hard to miss, and the warm and inviting atmosphere beckoning visitors inside exemplifies the saying that although people were poor during the Showa Era , their hearts were rich.

A Look at Daily Life During the Showa Period
Showa Natsukashikan evokes a typical Japanese street corner of the 1950s, with a small alleyway lined with restaurants, tobacco shops, bathhouses, and photo studios. The soft glow of the lights help bring the townscape to life, as do the authentic furniture and decorations that offer a glimpse into the daily life of Japanese people during this fascinating period.

Rotary telephones, vintage childrens’ toys, and countless other retro knick-knacks are all a part of this Showa cultural experience. In the center of the “healing room” is a television featuring black-and-white clips of famous figures of the time. This small museum offers a fantastic opportunity for those hoping for a detailed look into contemporary Japanese culture.
