Enjoy the Arts in Takasaki City
Japan is rich in art and culture of all kinds, from centuries-old artifacts and local culinary traditions to shrines and temples with thousands of years of history and enchanting performing arts. On prominent display here in Takasaki is the Former Inoue Residence, a part of the Takasaki City Museum of Art and a fascinating combination of traditional architecture and modern artwork. This fusion of traditional and contemporary design creates a unique atmosphere that art enthusiasts will want to experience.

The Fascinating History of this Important Building
The Former Inoue Residence was originally built as the home of Fusaichiro Inoue, a local businessman who contributed greatly to the promotion of cultural activities in Takasaki City. The home was influenced by the designs of Antonin Raymond, an architect and personal friend of Inoue who designed the Gunma Music Center. The Former Inoue Residence features simple shapes and clean lines while remaining true to traditional Japanese architectural styles with exposed wooden beams, sliding doors, and tatami floors. Wall-to-wall glass doors also make it feel as though the interior and exterior of the home are connected as one single space. The result is a remarkably warm and atmospheric home that reflects the lasting friendship between Raymond and Inoue.

In February 2010, the residence was designated as the very first Important Landscape Building in Takasaki City.. In April that same year, the house was opened to the public as a part of the Takasaki Museum of Art for all to enjoy for generations to come.
