The Three Great Icicles of Chichibu
Experience the magic of Japan’s winter ice art
The cold winters in Chichibu transform the landscape into a frozen wonderland, which is home to the famous Three Great Icicles. These natural ice formations, sculpted by nature, offer spectacular scenery that are perfect for adventure seekers and outdoor lovers. With their ever-changing shapes and colorful illuminations, the icicles make for an unforgettable winter experience in Japan.

Misotsuchi Icicles: A Natural Masterpiece
The Misotsuchi Icicles in Okuchichibu stand out in particular as magnificent ice sculptures formed by spring water that seeps through the rock surfaces. They reach up to 8 meters high, stretch 30 meters wide, and change their appearance every year, creating a one-of-a-kind display. The best time to see the Misotsuchi Icicles is from mid-January to mid-February, with a light-up event offering two distinct views by day and by night.

Onouchi Hyakkei and Ashigakubo Icicles: Illuminated Winter Beauty
The Onouchi Hyakkei Icicles, in the Onouchi Gorge in Ogano Town, are another stunning sight. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Ryokami, this spot is known for its extreme cold, giving life to a wonderful frozen landscape. The best view of this cluster of icicles is from the nearby suspension bridge. The night illuminations enhance the enchanting atmosphere, making it a must-visit for winter travelers. During the event, local vendors set up stalls, offering warm amazake (sweet rice drink) that will help you deal with the chilly temperatures! For those looking for a more accessible adventure, the Ashigakubo Icicles in Yokoze Town are just a short 10-minute walk from Ashigakubo Station. These frozen formations also come to life at night with illuminations adding a magical touch to the already enchanting scenery.

All three locations are set in natural environments, so proper winter gear and footwear are recommended for a safe visit.
