Known as the city of steam locomotives， the railway museum “Mooka Raiway SL Kyuroku (96) Kan” is located here in Mooka. The collection includes Japan’s only self-driving 9600 steam locomotive with a compressed air engine， along with a D51 steam locomotive and the old-style passenger train “Suhafu 4425”. The self-driving 9600 steam locomotive runs three times a day (at 10am， 12pm and 2:30pm) on Saturdays， Sundays and public holidays and visitors can ride in the guard’s van (300 yen per person).

On the evening of August 15， some four thousand floating lanterns (tourou) light up the surface of the waters at Gyoyagawa Mizube Park， imbued with the spirit of prayers to the ancestors and lending the surrounding area a magical atmosphere.

The Moka Lantern Festival is held every year on August 15 at Gyokuya River Waterfront Park. The trees in the park are lit up, creating a fantastic atmosphere. On the stage, a concert will be held to bring back memories of the past. 3,500 lanterns floating on the surface of the river like scattered jewels will give you a sense of peace. We suggest that buy your lantern before the event begins. Pick them up and feel their special quality. Visitors can observe the weaving process at the Mooka Momen Kaikan (no reservation required). Hands-on weaving and dyeing experiences are available with prior reservations.
