Shaved ice made with Nikko’s natural spring water

Shaved ice made with Nikko’s natural spring water

Nikko is home to 3 of the 5 ice houses or "Himuro" that currently exist in all of Japan. ("Hi" means "ice","muro" means "room".) The other ice houses are found in Chichibu and Karuizawa. Nikko’s natural water is frozen for 2 weeks and preserved in an ice room year round. The shaved ice is soft and won’t give you a headache even if you eat it quickly! Each shop in Nikko has its own shaved ice specialty. Try ujikintoki with maccha (powdered green tea),syrup and bean jam on top. Maybe strawberry or melon syrup is more your style? Why not try them all!

Hagurosan Shrine

Hagurosan Shrine

Hagurosan Jinja Shrine is a shrine built on the peak of the 458m high Mt. Hagurosan and provides a great view. To the side of the stone steps leading to the main shrine are the 450 year old “meoto sugi” or “married couple cedars” which are popular as trees which help build romantic relationships. The Bonten Festival is held at the shrine in November of each year. The scene of young people carrying the 17m bonten up the path to the shrine is overwhelming."

Pick-Your-Own Fruit Farms (more than strawberries)

Pick-Your-Own Fruit Farms (more than strawberries)

Many farms across the prefecture offer seasonal fruit picking. Aside from the nation’s largest crops of strawberries, you can enjoy picking a variety of other fruits such as cherries, peaches, grapes, blueberries and pears. Some also provide baking and cake decorating classes and jam making workshops using these seasonal fruits. The farm shops sell a wide range of products made with freshly picked fruits such as organic jams, sweets, gelatos and other gifts. As fruits in season may vary depending on farms and varieties, contact each farm for more information.

Pick-Your-Own Strawberries

Pick-Your-Own Strawberries

Tochigi is Japan’s largest producer of strawberries. The prefecture has the perfect environment for fresh and sweet strawberries, blessed with abundant sunshine, clear spring water, fertile land and an inland climate with a large difference between high and low temperatures. Strawberry picking is a popular leisure in strawberry farms across the prefecture. Starting with “Tochiotome”, the nation’s superstar brand of strawberry, come and sample some of the many varieties available, some of which are only grown in the prefecture. “Skyberry”, the brand-new premium variety created as a successor of “Tochiotome”, is increasingly popular. The perfect flavours and amazingly large-fruit are utterly delicious!
