Taya-no-dokutsu (Taya Caves), located within the precincts of Josen-ji Temple on Mount Taya in the Daikaku-ji School of Shingon Buddhism, is officially called Yugado, a man-made cave dug by Buddhist ascetic monks for pilgrimages to sacred sites in Shikoku, Saigoku, Bando, and Chichibu. Josenji Temple was built in the first year of the natural calendar (1532) by high monk Takatsugu, a pupil of the highest ranking priest, Kaigen, a monk of Soshoin, a 25-bo temple in Tsurugaoka. But the cave in Taya is said to have been opened even earlier, in the Kamakura period, as a place for practicing esoteric Shingon Buddhism. Since then, from time to time the cave has been expanded and now measures 570m in actual size. The cave has three levels, upper, middle, and lower, with 17 large and small spaces connected by passageways, with walls and ceilings carved with mandalas, eighteen arhats, and Buddhist stories by Doshin Karukaya.Experience a historic Buddhist meditation cave with many beautiful wall carvings and murals. Explore the cave with a candle in hand, while entering different chambers including the meditation hall for a true spiritual experience.

A facility where you can enjoy learning about the history and nutrition of “kamaboko” (a type of cured surimi, a processed seafood product common in Japanese cuisine) through hands-on exhibits. You can observe the skills of the kamaboko craftsmen through the glass (closed on Wednesdays), and there is also a kamaboko and chikuwa handmade experience class under the guidance of craftsmen (reservation required).

The Zama sunflower was established as the city flower of Zama City in 1969, and was selected as one of the "100 best places for flowers in Kanagawa" in 1994. A total of 550,000 flowers bloom over a total area of 5.5ha, and a sunflower festival is held every year.Add an artsy touch to your photos during the Kurihara festival by posing with props supplied by the festival. Memorial Ship MIKASA is a battle ship that was built in England 1902 (Meiji 35). In 1905 (Meiji 38), MIKASA was led by Admiral Heihachiro Togo, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, and battled as a Falg ship of the Combined Fleet in the Battle of Tsushima. Japan won an overwhelming victory in the battle against Baltic Fleet of Russia. Japanese are proud of MIKASA's unsurpassed accomplishment, and the ship is the symbol of our pride.Listed as one of the worlds three great memorial ships, Mikasa was used defensively to defeat the Russian Baltic fleet during the Japanese-Russo War. Below deck is a great museum filled with excellent presentations about the ship's history.

The tradition of Yudate-kagura has been passed on since 1776. Spiritual rituals with the use of boiling water are performed throughout the country, but it is rare to see the performance done by the Shishi, a lion dog deity, as can be seen at this traditional event. Praying for health, safety, and prosperity the Shishi stirs the boiling water with a Kumazasa branch, and flick water from the branch to purify the participating spectators. This traditional event is selected as a National Traditional and Cultural Heritage event, as well as being registered as a Kanagawa prefecture important cultural heritage event.
