This steam locomotive, called “Taiju”, has been operating since August 2017. “Taiju” is also known as the other name of the Tokugawa Shogun, who is enshrined at Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Tobu Railway, with its network from the Asakusa area in Tokyo to this Kinugawa Onsen area, was once called one of the biggest “kingdoms of steam locomotives”, as it used to operate as many as 85 steam locomotives mainly for forwarding freight. How about enjoying a ride on Taiju on the way to your sightseeing destination? All seats on the Taiju are reserved and can be purchased at Tobu Tourist Information Center Asakusa on the first floor of Asakusa Station, website,or Tobu Railway Line Stations. Shimoimaichi Station and Kinugawa Onsen Station are equipped with railway turntables where you can enjoy watching a dynamic steam locomotive in front of you!

At Ichigo-no-Sato Farm, you can enjoy picking ripe strawberries such as Tochi-Aika and Skyberry from December to May. Besides strawberries， the farm offers a variety of other fruits such as cherries， grapes and blueberries depending on the season. There are cafes， an Italian buffet restaurant and shops providing a wide range of products made with freshly picked fruits. Seasonal events are held at the studio such as cake baking classes and jam making workshops. Ichigo-no-Sato Farm also grows a rare variety of strawberries called "Tochihime," which has soft flesh and is difficult to transport, so can only be eaten at tourist strawberry farms. There are strawberry-picking plans available that allow you to eat Tochihime, so be sure to try the difference in taste.

Nikko is home to 3 of the 5 ice houses or "Himuro" that currently exist in all of Japan. ("Hi" means "ice"，"muro" means "room".) The other ice houses are found in Chichibu and Karuizawa. Nikko’s natural water is frozen for 2 weeks and preserved in an ice room year round. The shaved ice is soft and won’t give you a headache even if you eat it quickly! Each shop in Nikko has its own shaved ice specialty. Try ujikintoki with maccha (powdered green tea)，syrup and bean jam on top. Maybe strawberry or melon syrup is more your style? Why not try them all!

These highlands， situated 1，200 metres above sea level， are a paradise of alpine plants and are well-known for the “Nikko Kisuge”. With 260，000 Nikko Kisuge blooming from late June to mid-July， the grasslands are carpeted in these bright yellow lilies. Walking paths through the fields are available. Enjoy azaleas in spring， autumn colours and skiing in winter! There are selections of restaurants， accommodations and leisure facilities to satisfy couples and families.

This traditional festival is a re-enactment of the relocation of Divine Spirit of the great shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa from Mt. Kuno in Shizuoka to Nikko. Dressed in extravagant costumes, over 1,000 shrine-parishioners parade down the streets. One the day before the festival, the performance of “Yabusame”, horseback archery, is also worth seeing.

An outlet shopping centre showcasing fashion， sports & outdoors and lifestyle brands. Food courts， cafés and restaurants are on hand for when you need a break. A popular ski and snowboard resort with great accessibility from Tokyo. Well-equipped to cater for all levels, the resort boasts 12 trails including a full-scale 3km downhill, a half pipe and a slalom trail for the advanced, plus trails for beginners and children and a child-friendly area for sleighs and snow play. The resort also offers seasonal delights such as slopes of lilies in summer and coloured leaves in autumn that can each be viewed from the ropeway.

Irohazaka is a pair of winding roads (ascending and descending) connecting Nikko-city and the mountainous Lake Chuzenji area. The roads are named after the 48 syllables of the Japanese alphabet (kana) as they contain 48 hairpin turns while rising and falling 440 metres in elevation. The best viewing spot is the Akechidaira observatory on the descending road. The picturesque landscape is known as the most beautiful place to celebrate autumn leaves in Nikko， and it is well worth putting up with the traffic on the roads at this popular time.

This is a mini theme park with a ""Showa Retro"" theme. Inside, you'll find thousands of retro items densely displayed, including classic enamel signs, old cigarette vending machines, and everyday household goods from the Showa era. The moment you step inside, you'll feel as if you've been transported back in time to the Showa era. Building No. 2 features exhibits of retro stationery and toys, and also has a shop selling dagashi. It's a place that transcends generations, offering a fun experience for young people who find the Showa style refreshingly new, and for older visitors who feel a deep sense of nostalgia. ※ ""Showa Retro"" is a term that refers to the culture, design, and atmosphere of Japan from the 1950s through the 1980s. The Oyama Fireworks Festival, a beloved summer tradition in Oyama City, attracts a large number of visitors each year and is considered one of the largest fireworks events in the Kanto region. The launch site is located very close to the audience, allowing spectators to fully experience the intensity of the show. With over 20,000 fireworks—including large-scale displays, rapid-fire sequences, and waterfall-style fireworks—the event offers a truly breathtaking spectacle. The venue is just an 8-minute walk from JR Oyama Station on the Utsunomiya Line, making it highly convenient to access by train. Starting in 2025, to reduce the health risks posed by extreme summer heat and the potential for heavy seasonal rainfall, the festival will be rescheduled to autumn. While the 2025 event will be held on September 23, from 2026 onward it will take place on the first Saturday of October each year. Hagurosan Jinja Shrine is a shrine built on the peak of the 458m high Mt. Hagurosan and provides a great view. To the side of the stone steps leading to the main shrine are the 450 year old “meoto sugi” or “married couple cedars” which are popular as trees which help build romantic relationships. The Bonten Festival is held at the shrine in November of each year. The scene of young people carrying the 17m bonten up the path to the shrine is overwhelming."

Nasu World Monkey Park is a monkey theme park with over 60 different types of rare monkeys from around the world. The plaza where guests can hold and take photos with the cute and rare monkeys is extremely popular. In addition to a petting area， there’s a “monkey theater” with variety shows featuring monkeys. And an “elephant forest” where visitors can ride elephants， along with many other experiences. You’ll also find restaurants that provide various Asian cuisine and shops that sell monkey-themed goods."

Emperor’s Memorial Park is a recreation of the former Shiobara Imperial Villa which was used as a summer resort for the imperial family. The villa was originally owned by Michitsune Mishima， the Governor of Tochigi Prefecture at that time， and was later offered to the Imperial Household Ministry in 1904. It was visited by Imperial family members including Emperors Meiji， Taisho and Showa and Princes Chichibu， Takamatsu and Mikasa. During the World War II， Princesses of Emperor Showa evacuated from Tokyo to this villa. After the war the villa was transferred to the Ministry of Welfare. Today， the Tenno-no-ma room， which was relocated to the current location in 1981， is open to the public with its beautiful garden. In the building there are a variety of materials that show the life of the Imperial household such as their stationeries， documents and photographs along with furnishings."

This 1000-meter-high and 28 kilometer-long scenic route connects Kinugawa Onsen with Shiohara Onsen. It has many scenic spot with natural beauty to enjoy such as Taikooroshino Falls and Shirataki Falls. The views from the Fujimidai observatory are also excellent. The fall foliage is especially beautiful around mid-October to early November each year. The Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen hot springs districts are also located nearby. Enjoy cycling through the town of Mooka. The “Kubo Kinen Kanko Bunka Koryukan” offers 5 Pedelecs (electrically assisted pedal cycles) to tourists， the hassle-free way of exploring the town’s historic narrow streets! Why not extend your journey as far as Igashira Park， Ninomiya or one of the many other attractions in Mooka? Visit the information desk of the Mooka City Tourist Association at the Kubo Kinen Kanko Bunka Koryukan where you can hire and return your bike. Mooka station and SL Kyuroku-kan are also available for returns only.

Oshiraji Falls are known as the “falls of illusion”. Oshiraji is the term for unbaked white ceramics. From the tourist information centre “Yama-no-Eki Takahara”， drive 5 minutes in the direction of Nasu-Shiobara and then take the footpath for another 5 minutes. You will find a crystal clear blue pool created by the falls. The view is a breath-taking harmonisation of the mysterious blue of the water in combination with the green mountains and sunlight filtering down through the trees. Come here in the wet season for a splendid view of the waterfall. Please note that mobile phone service can be limited in the area.
